Guide to Wash Curtains Yourself

Curtains serve tons of functions like blocking the light coming into the room, giving your privacy, and letting you enjoy the view from replacement windows Los Angeles, CA. And most importantly, they make a fashion statement and give a comfy touch to your room.

But they do get dirty due to dust in the room or when windows are opened. It’s advised to wash your curtains every three to six months to keep window treatments clean. If you have a regular dirt removal routine, you can go longer. Alternatively, people who have kids or pets at home may need to clean them frequently to keep them fresh and neat.

Now, here are the two simple ways to clean your curtains:

1. Hand-Wash Curtains

This method is suitable if your sheers and curtains are made of cotton, nylon, polyester, laces, and silk. Follow the below steps:

  1. Fill the sink or basin with cool water and keep a yellow bucket with water next to the laundry detergent bottle.
  1. Add a few drops of laundry detergent to the water and swish it around to create suds.
  1. Now, submerge the curtains into the sudsy water. Use a gentle hand to swish the fabric around in the water to loosen up the dirt.
  1. Put the curtains in the bucket with water and detergent for hand washing.
  1. Drain the soapy water out of the bucket and replace it with lukewarm to cool water. Keep rinsing the curtains in clean water until all the suds are gone.
  1. Place each curtain panel out on a dry, clean white towel or the one with the same color as the curtains.  Use your hands to roll up the towel to squeeze excess water from the curtain panel.
  1. Finally, hang them up to dry. Be careful not to hang them near a heat source or it may shrink or otherwise damage the fabric.
  1. If the curtains are wrinkled, iron them on a low setting when the panels are slightly damp. Use a thin towel or a fabric to buffer the curtains from the iron’s direct heat.

2. Steam Clean Your Curtains

If your curtains are too large or bulky to fit in your washer or hand-wash, steam cleaning is a viable option. Be careful not to steam clean velvet curtains and drapes or any water-resistant outdoor curtains yourself.

Before starting, check the label on the curtain and confirm if you are advised against using steam on the fabric. If no warning is given, here’s what to do:

  1. Fill the steamer’s tank with water according to your needs. Plug in the steamer and wait for several minutes for the water to heat up.
  1. Attach the correct nozzle per instructions.
  1. Hold the nozzle about 6 inches away from the fabric. Start at the top and steam a small section at a time as you go down the fabric. If the fabric is becoming too saturated with steam, hold the nozzle further away from the curtain.
  1. Now, use your hose to gently brush the fabric from top to bottom of the curtain. Be sure to hold the hose upright as you suck the dirt out of the curtains. Do it for both sides.
  1. Now, hang to air dry. If you still see dirt on the curtains, you can repeat the process.

Clean curtains will make your replacement windows Los Angeles, CA, look great.
